The purpose of this paper is to investigate the interplay between plant phenotype, plant RNA expression, and the soil microbiome. The microbial communities of plant root zones have roles in plant disease resistance and suppression, nutrient availability, and stress protection and resilience. The plant microbiomes change over time based on selective pressures from the environment or other organisms. The current focus of this field aims to capitalize the microbiomes of the medicinal plants, and it turns out that the microbes are directly involved in the production of the plant therapeutic compounds. The present work is a review of several works that specify the importance of plant-microbe interactions to plant defenses and productivity, and what is known about the role of microbes in plant essential oil and secondary metabolite accumulation. One of the most interesting aspects of the a literature review is a revelation that there are parallels between plant secondary metabolite-related gene expression and the gene expression of endophytes and rhizosphere-dwelling soil microbes.
